Covia is looking for a dynamic Health & Safety/Quality Control Technician who will have a positive impact on the Operations team at its Oregon, IL location. As a Health & Safety/Quality Control Technician, you will report to the Environmental, Health & Safety/ Quality Supervisor (EHS/QC Supervisor). Your primary responsibility will be to assist in the administration, monitoring and compliance of the Company's Safety, Health and Quality Control programs at the Oregon site.
The successful incumbent will have the following Key Accountabilities:
Safety Responsibilities


  • Adhere to, comply with, and assist the EHS/QC Supervisor manage all MSHA safety rules, regulations and Covia specific requirements.
  • Assist the EHS/QC Supervisor develop, facilitate, implement, train and manage the health and safety system which will meet or exceed all aforementioned regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in a regular area inspection program and Behavior Based Safety (BBS) observation system that involves all employees at the plant.
  • Participate in developing the active safety training program, including MSHA Training and Monthly Safety Meetings.
  • Maintain and update monthly a prioritized list of safety items requiring attention from data gathered from plant inspections, safety meetings, shift reports, and MSHA inspections.
  • Schedule and conduct monthly Safety Team inspections,
  • Perform and monitor respirable dust surveys for all employees and work areas.
  • Perform and monitor noise exposure surveys for all employees and work areas.
  • File reports of accidents/injuries that occur on plant property, including employee personal injury, property damage, and near-miss accidents.
  • Monitor the fire extinguisher program to ensure appropriate and adequate equipment is installed and maintained in work areas and mobile equipment.
  • Maintain communications with the Corporate Safety & Health Department.
  • Recommend changes in plant procedures or policy as needed to improve the health and safety of all employees.
  • Act as a facilitator and active member of the plant safety committee and schedule regular meetings. Record meeting minutes and prepare action items as necessary.
  • Act as a back-up on environmental monitoring and compliance to the EHS/QC Supervisor

    Quality Responsibilities

    • Run daily quality control samples and record and save all test results.
    • Perform instrument calibration according to the prescribed schedule.
    • Prepare and ship monthly composites to the corporate lab. Prepare and ship sample requests as necessary.
    • Assist the EHS/QC Supervisor in the implementation of the Quality Implementation Program (QIP).
    • Prepare customer reports and compile necessary data as requested.
    • Other duties as assigned

      The successful incumbent will have the following Minimum Qualifications:

      • Associates degree or higher in applicable field preferred but not required.
      • If no college degree is present, then incumbent must have a minimum of three (3) years' relevant experience in Health and Safety and or Quality/laboratory work at a mining or manufacturing facility.
      • MSHA Part 46 or 48 Training Certification and/or previous exposure to surface and dredge mining with aggregates in a plant environment a plus.
      • Proficient in Word, Excel and knowledge database systems.
      • Strong experience in industrial/mining safety and health programs and or quality programs.
