Trainee, on an indeterminate shift, participates in an
agency-sponsored training program for a period of six to twelve
months in Illinois State Police (ISP) telecommunications
applications designed to develop familiarization with ISP
telecommunications procedures and practices and the usage of
two-way radio, computer terminal equipment, and telephone call
taking procedures. - Excellent communication skills are required. -

ResponsibilitiesParticipates in practical and skill development
training requiring the use and/or operation of various equipment. -
Receives oral instructions and visually observes the proper methods
of equipment use. - Practices and demonstrates skill levels. -
Performs selected telecommunicator duties in a learning and skills
development capacity under the immediate direction of a higher
level telecommunicator or supervisor. - Monitors, transmits, and
receives emergency and police radio messages (base to base and base
to mobile). - Operates personal computer to enter and retrieve
information through the computer based information network:
Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Computerized Criminal History (CCH),
Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS), National Law
Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS), National Crime
Information Center (NCIC), Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID),
Criminal History Record Information (CHRI), Secretary of State
(SOS), National Warning System (NAWAS), Emergency Network (EmNet),
and ICase. - Answers and responds to incoming requests for service
from the public via telephone. -Operates a teletype machine to
process non-voice communications.Receives on-the-job formal and/or
informal orientation in training to acquaint the employee with the
duties and responsibilities of the telecommunicator position and
the interpretation of ISP communications procedures, Federal
Communications Commission rules and regulations, and the ISP
computer system.Job Responsibilities (continued)Attends classes,
listens to instructors, observes visual demonstrations, takes
notes, and studies course material. - Takes quizzes and tests
designed to evaluate progress and demonstrate knowledge of the
telecommunicator trainee curriculum. - If the outcome of quizzes
and tests indicates the necessity, participates in remedial
training.Inserts updates into operational manuals. - Maintains
files, inputs arrests, warnings, and motorist assist documents into
a centralized computer database.Attends and participates in staff
meetings, conferences, workshops, and other activities which
provide meaningful learning experiences. - Performs other duties as
required or assigned.Minimum RequirementsRequires knowledge, skill,
and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years
of high school.Ability to type accurately at a minimum of 30
wpm.Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility
Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and
training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu
of the stated requirements for this class.Preferred
QualificationsAt least six (6) months of experience with
keyboarding or computer typing.At least six (6) months of
experience using basic computer systems or software.At least three
(3) months of experience with obtaining and providing information
via a standard telephone or two-way radio.At least three (3) months
of experience or coursework involving filing or organizing
documents, either paper or electronic.At least three (3) months of
prior full-time or part-time job experience.Prior preparation of
three (3) or more written documents (i.e. essays, research papers,
notes, etc.) during school coursework or other training
courses.Conditions of EmploymentAbility to pass an Illinois State
Police background check and drug screening.Ability to acquire a
valid LEADS operator certificate.Requires a clear speaking
voice.Must be able to work assigned shifts, weekends, and holidays.
