Seasonal- year round; Tuesdays and Thursdays, and some Saturday/Schools out days-Field trips; Approximately 8-10 hours a week

Position Description

As an UKUU Support Specialist you will be working directly with Middle/High School aged youth (6th-12th grades). Your main responsibility will be to assist the Recreation Coordinator and/or UKUU Coordinator with weekly meetings and occasional field trips. UKUU (which means greatness in Swahili) helps teens achieve greatness in all aspects of life. This program is designed to encourage service in the community, foster leadership development, expose teens to different vocations, and promote educational excellence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned

Operational Excellence

  • Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator and/or UKUU Coordinator, initiates and executes specialty recreational programs, assists with curriculum, lesson plans, program evaluation, and assessment of participant's progress for functional age appropriate activities in the UKUU Leadership Program.
  • Responsible for leading one-on-one or small group sessions that cater to the needs and goals of the tween/teens in the UKUU Leadership Program.
  • Assists participants with homework, projects, and other academic tasks when needed.
  • Works with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
  • Teach skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions.
  • Implements age and skill appropriate activities to allow for maximum participation to meet the needs of individual participants.
  • Assists and/or leads discussions/lessons from curriculum provided by Recreation Coordinator and/or UKKU Coordinator.
  • Leads by example by being a positive role model to the tween/teen participants.
  • Engages with tween/teen participants through mentorship.
  • Available to attend monthly field trips and service projects that may be scheduled for Saturdays or days that tween/teens are not in school.

Compliance

  • Attends safety training programs and educational in-service trainings as required.
  • Attends scheduled meetings as determined by the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Informs facility supervisor of supplies needed
  • Assesses and informs facility supervisor of site safety concerns in the facility or play area such as: park users, play and recreation equipment, hazards, etc.
  • Ensures daily documentation occur correctly and on time including but not limited to attendance logs, accident-incident reports, property loss reports, and daily checklists.
  • Helps enforce program policy and procedures using positive communication with program participants, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of Rockford Park District personnel policies and protocols.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of Rockford Park District safety procedures. Attend safety training programs and educational in-service trainings as required.

Professional Relations

  • Meets, greets, and communicates with patrons, customers, parents/guardians and co-workers on a daily basis.
  • Maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Conducts regular check-ins and workplace visits with program participants.
  • Conducts regular check-ins with workplace supervisors.
  • Assist customers and program participants as needed.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • 21 years old or older, High School diploma or GED
  • 1-3 years of experience in interacting with youth ages 12-18 with and without disabilities in a recreation setting preferred.
  • Driver's license with the ability to become van driver trained through the Rockford Park District is preferred.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED training (can be obtained through Rockford Park District).

  • Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance.
  • Ability to problem solve in a variety of situations.
