Job Description

Shift : Rotating

Purpose of Position: Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist in unit dose, out-patient prescriptions and assisting in the preparation of drugs in accordance with established procedures as outlined in Part 29.7 of the pharmacy handbook. Performs related work.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Counts dosage units of drugs and places unit doses in appropriate cassette for dispensing. Dosage units are verified by medication name, formulation, dose, route and frequency.
Receives written/electronic prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes.
Types and retrieves prescription data from a computer generated file for review.
Able to operate and refill robot for inpatient and outpatient filling.
Prepares manual dispensing records for approval by a pharmacist.
Maintains and retrieves pharmacy records using automated and I or manual systems.
Obtains drugs from stock, returns them to stock and rotates stock
Performs pharmacy related clerical tasks.
Make round of nursing units to pick up pharmacy orders or return medications
Performs unit dose cart exchanges as scheduled, or related tasks
Prepare and replace Emergency Trays;
Maintain appropriate records for all controlled and non-controlled drug transactions;
Prepackage and label drugs;
Receive drug items from suppliers or mailroom, process invoices accordingly and scan medication into system;
Re-order supplies and drugs proactively
Maintain knowledgeable regarding proper handling of hazardous materials;
Shall ensure the overall cleanliness of work area.
Attend educational programs and department staff development activities;
Participate in Pharmacy/Nursing Committee and other committees as needed
Check e-mail daily at beginning of shift for announcements
Attend staff meetings and/ or read minutes- in order to be knowledgeable of Department policies and protocols;
Perform monthly nursing unit inspections pharmacy, storeroom and other related areas as assigned per designated inspection beets.
Performs assignments under the supervision of Pharmacists Levels I, II & III and management team
Delivers and refills medications, for the automated dispensing machines, i.e. drawer recovery, review and removal of outdated medications etc.
Maintains and inspects inventory of automated dispensing machines.
Compounds batch medications in a sterile environment under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
Assist maintaining refrigerator or freezer logs and other documents as needed.
Answer telephone call and assist as needed
Aids in the general operation of pharmacy and assists pharmacist as necessary
Maintains knowledge of Joint Commission standards for medication management
Escalate any issues/problems identified to pharmacist or management team
Properly discard medication waste or expired medications.
Demonstrates proficiency in Retail Pharmacy Department counts, pours, labels and prepares medication for Pharmacist to review, performs pick up and payment tasks.
Demonstrates proficiency in Retail Pharmacy Department software, reviews patient information, enter prescription information, adjudicates claims, and prints label.
Performs compounding and other drug preparation functions.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school graduation or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma and six months pharmacy experience performing the major duties described above; or
2. Enrollment in a School of Pharmacy accredited by the American Counsel on Pharmaceutical Education; and
3. Successful completion of an on-the-job and/or classroom training program.

Department Preferences

Strong background in the use of computers and basic Microsoft programs.
Knowledge of 340B Federal Drug Program
