. (TREX) is seeking a mission-driven and strategic leader to join our team as Associate Executive Director (AED), serving one of our premier clients, the Skin of Color Society (SOCS) . This is a full-time, exempt position (40 hours/week) based in Chicago with hybrid/remote flexibility, reporting directly to the Executive Director. SOCS is a globally recognized organization dedicated to advancing excellence in skin of color dermatology through education, research, mentorship, and advocacy. This role presents a unique opportunity to help shape the organization's future while working closely with an engaged Board, dedicated staff, and passionate member community.The Associate Executive Director will provide leadership across a wide range of organizational priorities, including driving the implementation of strategic initiatives, managing day-to-day operations, and supporting membership growth and engagement. The AED will partner closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and committees to strengthen governance, lead cross-functional teams, and ensure alignment with SOCS' mission and values. This role also includes executive oversight of national and global programs, annual meetings, and key partnerships, as well as financial stewardship and vendor management.   • Minimum 10 years of experience in nonprofit or association management, ideally with a background in dermatological, DEI, and/or medical societies.
  • Proven success in leading organizational operations, board relations, and strategic implementation.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing complex budgets and vendor relationships.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive storyteller with a strategic mindset.
  • A relationship-builder who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to turn insights into actionable plans.
  • Willingness to travel (national at first and international overtime) and work flexible hours for evening meetings and events.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree and/or CAE preferred.CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Organizational Strategy & Leadership
    • Actively take part in and drive the implementation of the SOCS strategic plan in alignment with SOCS' mission to promote awareness of and excellence within skin of color dermatology through research, education, mentorship, and advocacy.
    • Oversee project and program managers leading SOCS initiatives.
    • Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director in advancing organizational effectiveness and impact.
    • Build cross-functional alignment with internal staff and SOCS member volunteers, cultivating a strong team culture rooted in equity, integrity, collaboration, and accountability.Membership & Community Engagement
      • Oversee the development and execution of membership growth strategies, with an intentional focus on inclusion, global expansion, retention, and member engagement.
      • Ensure that SOCS member offerings reflect diverse and equitable access to educational resources, leadership pathways, professional development, and networking opportunities.
      • Analyze membership trends, create data dashboards, and translate insights into strategies that expand reach and impact.
      • Collaborate with the Membership and Integrated Communications Managers to enhance storytelling, build a community identity, and strengthen partnerships.
        Governance & Board Relations
        • Serve as an advisor and operational liaison to the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Committees, ensuring alignment with governance best practices.
        • Support leadership development of Board members and emerging leaders through training, onboarding, and ongoing communication.
        • Lead the preparation and documentation of Board and select committee meetings, including agenda creation, minutes, and follow-up of action items.
        • Foster transparency and responsiveness in reporting, risk management, and policy development.Committee, Task Force & Volunteer Engagement
          • Manage and guide selected standing committees, support staff liaisons with remaining committees with clear communication, strategic facilitation, and actionable support.
          • Provide executive oversight and support to committee staff liaisons, project managers, and program managers and their strategic related initiatives.
          • Ensure SOCS staff feel empowered and valued while maintaining accountability for committee and program output and deliverables.Annual Meetings, Programs & Events
            • Provide executive oversight for SOCS Annual Scientific Symposiums, Global Council meetings, Meeting the Challenge Summits, and Center for Leadership and other professional development events.
            • Develop sponsor relationships and industry collaborations that align with SOCS' values and promote financial sustainability.
            • Executive oversight of vendors and/or contractors, with direct oversight of contract management and industry relations.Finance, Budgeting & Compliance
              • Work with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee to develop and manage organizational budgets that balance fiscal responsibility with strategic and mission-driven investments.
              • Review financial reports, assess risk, and identify trends and opportunities for revenue diversification, including grants and philanthropic support.
              • Maintain oversight of payables, receivables, and external vendors, including accountants and bookkeepers.External Relations & Strategic Partnerships
                • Serve as a key ambassador and representative of SOCS in external partnerships, alliances, coalitions, and joint initiatives that promote equity and public health.
                • Build strategic collaborations with peer organizations, government entities, industry leaders, and academic institutions to advance research, mentorship, education, and advocacy goals.
                • Represent the organization in external meetings and media, as needed.
